Set Up:

This is an intense activity focusing on the back 4 defensive organization in and around the penalty box.  The coach starts a sequence of 12 continuous attacks from different locations around the box.  The defenders must work tirelessly to shut down shooting opportunities and mark the strikers tightly.  The activity begins with a pass to an attacker either side of the coach.  The attacker can penetrate into the box on a dribble, shoot or pass the ball to any of the attacking players.  The defenders must remain in the penalty box and organize themselves to prevent the attacking team from getting clear shots at goal.  The defenders must be courageous in charging down any potential shots and make cal-culated decisions when assessing the threat from different attacking positions.  In addition to passing the ball left or right the coach can shout “LEFT” or “RIGHT” to initiate an attack from a wide player. The wide player collects a ball from the pile and crosses into the box or penetrates on the dribble.  The attacking team has 12 opportunities to score and then change the teams.  If the defenders win possession they attempt to pass to the coach for a point.

Coaching Points:

1.  Always stop the ball.

2.  Cover the most dangerous players first.

3.  Communicate - The first shout sorts it out.

Progression:

1.  Add a defensive midfielder who is free to leave the penalty area.
