Dealing with the Volley, Falling on the Ball
Dealing with the Volley, Falling on the Ball
Organization:
Warm up and technical activity.
Equipment; balls and cones
Set up a small box (1y x 1y) with cones for the goalkeepers to step forward through. The goalie ‘on deck’ waits on the bottom of the box until the goalkeeper in front is gone. The trainer stands 8 yards from the goalie, with a couple goalies standing next to him. They will run up to the ball when the trainer rolls the ball out. The trainer volleys the ball in the face of the goalkeeper two or three times, before rolling it to the side. The goalkeeper quickly attacks the ball and falls on the ball. The goalkeeper standing next to the trainer runs up to put light pressure on the goalkeeper attacking the ball. Roll ball to left and right side of the goalie. Also vary where you roll the ball to. More to the side or more straight to the goalie, for example.
Focus Points:
-
Proper technique of catching a ball at face or above head height.
-
Quick reaction towards the ball.
-
When going to the left, the last large step should be with the left foot. When going to the right, the last large step should be with the right foot.
-
Bring hands to the ball with stretched out arms.
-
Fall on your side and either keep the ball out or secure it on the chest.
-
Keep your head tucked to protect your face until the attacker is out of the way.
-
Show courage.
