Clearing the Box
Clearing the Box
Set Up:
There are 12 players set up in the attacking third, playing 4v2 in the penalty area with 2 defenders stationed outside of the area in a central zone. During the drill, the four defenders clear crosses played in from the Feeders, directing them up and out into the small goals. The two attackers in the penalty area try to finish the crosses. Also, the two attackers in the central zone try to intercept short clearances and take them right to goal. When goals are scored or the ball is put out of play, A Feeder re-starts the drill with the next cross. The pairs of attackers switch places after every cross. The two groups switch places after ten crosses.
Coaching Points:
1. Clearing headers have to be directed up and out towards the flanks.
2. Constantly work to be closer to the ball and closer to the goal than your man is.
3. See the man, see the ball, and stay touch tight to your man.
Progressions:
1. Add two more attackers in the penalty area and play 6v4.
