USA - Defensive Compactness
USA - Defensive Compactness
WHY USE IT:
Confronted with a very tough group the traditional excellent organization of the USA team seems critical. This session, attributed to the great Arrigo Saachi, can help with organization.
SET UP:
Place up to 11 flags around a full field to simulate the shape of the opponent.
Place your 11 players on the field in your chosen formation.
HOW TO PLAY:
With the 11 players in position, the coach (in pink) plays the ball to different flags and the team must immediately adjust to the location of the ball. Three players (in green) shag balls for the coach, returning them to the penalty area as the coach continues to distribute balls around the field.
Progression/alternative:
1. Place the flags in specific areas of the thirds (or quarters) of the field and centrally or wide.
2. Vary the formation of the flags to simulate a variety of opposing formations
3. Work with 10 players to simulate effective defending with a player down.
TECHNIQUES:
1. Moving, sliding and stepping with specific attention to spacing relative to teammates and the ball.
2. Communication from behind to forward and from side to side as a unit.
MAIN COACHING POINTS:
1. Every time the ball moves, every player has a run to make.
2. The decision of when to press, cover, or balance is crucial.
3. The two forwards cut off back help and prevent switches of the field.
